Heat Pump Rebates for Marlborough Residents in 2024

Do you need new heat or air conditioning? Are you a homeowner in Marlborough, Massachusetts? Do you enjoy saving money while living more comfortably? Well, you are in the right place! Generous rebates provided via MassSave® and the federal government are helping people in Marlborough take advantage of this cutting-edge heating and cooling technology every day.

What Rebates are Available in Marlborough?

MassSave® offers three rebates plus an interest-free loan to incentivize heat pump installations. Alternatively, low-income residents can qualify for 100% coverage via the Marlborough Community Action Council. Finally, the federal government offers an extra $2,000 Federal Tax Credit via the Inflation Reduction Act. Please note: restrictions apply and not all will qualify for every incentive.

  • 100%-Off Low Income Program: If your household is currently receiving a discounted rate on your Heating or Electricity bills, then your local Community Action Council will most likely cover the entire cost of your heat pump installation. Use this link to find your local community action council, Home – MASSCAP. You can also contact us directly and we will help walk you through the process.

  • MassSave® $16,000 Enhanced Heating and Cooling Incentive: If your household is within the median range of income for Marlborough ($45,393 - $91,200), then you will most likely qualify for a $16,000 rebate after installation
  • MassSave® $10,000 Whole-Home Rebate: If your household is above the median income for Marlborough ($91,201 and above), then you will most likely qualify for a $10,000 rebate after installation.

  • MassSave® Partial-Home Rebate: As an alternative to the above Whole Home rebates, MassSave® offers a Partial-Home Rebate of $1,250 per ton (12,000 BTUs) of heating capacity installed; with a maximum of $10,000. This rebate is designed to work with your original heating system instead of replacing it. If you have a single room that needs help heating or cooling, this is an excellent incentive to take advantage of.

  • MassSave® 0% Interest Heat Loan: 0% Interest over 7 years; up to $50,000. This interest-free loan for Heat Pump installation is an excellent option to cover any remaining out of pocket costs. Please note: this incentive is expected to change to a 5-year term with $25,000 maximum in 2025.

  • Inflation Reduction Act Tax Credit: Separately from MassSave®, the federal government is offering a $2,000 tax credit for heat pump installations. The credit amount is 30% of the cost of a heat pump system, up to $2,000. Most installations will qualify for the entire $2,000 Federal Tax Credit.

How to get the MassSave® Heat Pump Rebate on Your Own?

  1. Schedule your No-Cost Home Energy Assessment with MassSave®: MassSave® will send a certified agent to check your home’s insulation level to ensure maximum heating efficiency before your home is sized for a heat pump. MassSave® currently requires attic insulation to be R-49 or better. If your insulation level is below R-49, MassSave® will cover 75% - 100% of the cost to have it updated. Modern Energy has an excellent insulation department and can assist with this step if necessary.
  2. Contact a MassSave® certified contractor: MassSave® only wants people who know what they're doing installing heat pump systems, which is why they made a public list of every contractor in the state installing heat pumps. You can find this list on their website and contact a contractor you deem trustworthy. We recommend contacting at least 2 different contractors to compare quotes.
  3. Research Heat Pump models: Typically, the contractor will give you a proposal including heat pump model numbers. Make sure that the contractor is registered with the manufacturer they're installing and are able to give you access to the extended equipment warranty. Then you'll want to double check the installed equipment against MassSave®'s approved equipment list.
  4. Pay full price for the services: You will pay the contractor up front for the equipment and installation. Once the installation is complete, you will need to submit all required paperwork to MassSave® for their review, and they may send someone out to confirm that the system was installed correctly. Within the next several months they will send you the check for your rebate amount.
